What Should Museums Display?

Dr Ross Parry sent this round via the email list in our department, I do not think he would mind if we post it up here as well...

‘What Should Museums Display?’, 31 May 2007, 7pm, National Portrait Gallery

The need for this debate arose out of consultations held while preparing the Gallery’s current exhibition ‘Between Worlds: Voyagers to Britain 1700-1850’ and in particular the inclusion of racially sensitive historical material.

It offers museum professionals and students the chance to discuss the matter while also being an opportunity for the public to contribute to this important area of the life of museums and galleries.

The debate will be chaired by NPG Director, Sandy Nairne, and the panel includes Oku Ekpenyon; Ratan Vashwani from the Museums Association (one of the formulators of their ethics guidelines for curators); John McAleer Curator of Imperial and 18th-Century History at the National Maritime Museum (and the curator preparing the NMM’s new Atlantic Gallery) and Claude Ardouin, Head of the Africa Section of the Ethnography Department of the British Museum.

The audience will include the curators of the exhibition and guests from other museums in the UK.
